What’s included at Mahogany Bay cruise port?
We haven’t docked here, so I can’t say anything about it personally. But, from what I’ve read it is a much more developed port area with a variety of things to do right there, including a free beach for cruise passengers only. Right at the pier, you’ll find plenty of stores offering both local goods and the traditional duty-free shops found at many cruise ports. There are also many restaurants with outdoor seating to take advantage of Roatan’s fantastic weather. Gumbalimba Park is a popular destination for visitors to the Caribbean island of Roatan.
However, it is strongly recommended to have a valid passport in case of an emergency or a change of plans, such as missing the ship or needing to fly back home. Along West Bay beach, there are several hotels and resorts, including the popular Infinity Bay Resort (pictured below). Once you disembark your ship, walking off the dock will lead you straight into a large Dufry duty-free store. This area sells beach necessities and souvenirs as well as common duty-free goods like liquor and perfume. It’s part of the path that leads off the dock and out of the terminal area. The main shopping and dining area at Mahogany Bay is located just beyond the terminal and duty-free store. Also known as the Port of Roatan, this is the smaller of the two terminals and was named after the pirate John Coxen.
This island resort is also the most booked tour in Roatan and offered as both daily cruise excursion and overnight (Bed and Breakfast) deals. When we were in port (September 2023), the only cruise ship visiting the island was ours – The Wonder of the Seas. Coxen Hole provides shopping, dining options, transportation services (taxis, buses, rentals), and opportunities to explore the local culture. Cruise ships typically dock in Roatan for one day, with the duration of the visit ranging from early morning to late afternoon or early evening. Ultimately, both cruise line and private company excursions offer unique advantages.
